Pro wrestling: Dumas discovers slower lifestyle away from the ring

The “grind.”
For professional wrestlers, there is no offseason. They don’t get vacation — unless they get hurt. Pay-per-views, live television programs, house shows on the weekend, autograph signings, special appearances, photo shoots, gym workouts, physical therapy sessions, etc. Whatever leftover time is dedicated to your real life.
If you even have one.
Amy Dumas, who reached stardom as the World Wrestling Entertainment grappler Lita, said she retired from wrestling in Nov. 2006 because of the grueling schedule that kept her busy almost every day of the year during her eight-year career. WWE officials wanted Dumas to resign for five years.
“It was kind of just like a been there, done that,” Dumas said during a recent interview from Atlanta. “Been there, done that. Man, I have other stuff to do.”
She said the freedom of being able to eat dinner without having to answer a phone call or attending a friend’s birthday party is liberating. While exiting the bright wrestling spotlight, Dumas formed an Atlanta-based punk rock band called The Luchagors.
Dumas admits she hasn’t watched much wrestling since leaving WWE. She still keeps in touch with former WWE diva Trish Stratus because they’ve followed similar career paths. She also regularly talks to former boyfriends Matt Hardy and Adam Copeland (Edge).
After Dumas began dating Copeland shortly after breaking up with Hardy, their relationship turned into an onscreen angle. It also resulted in Lita turning heel and portraying a much less desirable character. She doesn’t attribute that character change as a reason for retiring.
“Having the last two years of my character pretty much being a ringside slut, but when you think of Lita, you think that she could actually go out there and wrestle,” Dumas said. “It wouldn’t totally taint my legacy.”
Dumas points to three distinct high points in her wrestling career: a “Raw” main event featuring her and The Rock vs. Triple H and Stratus; another “Raw” main event pitting her against Stephanie McMahon with The Rock as guest referee when she won her first women’s championship (the first time ever two women met in a main event); and her third women’s title win against Stratus on “Raw.”
“To have basically the entire locker room standing in the Gorilla position coming through, clapping and saying, ‘Most of the guys on our roster couldn’t have had a match that good,’” Dumas said. “If it was me and Trish in a mud match, it wouldn’t have been nearly as fulfilling as us going out there and putting on a match that was as good as the guys.”
Unlike some former WWE performers, Dumas left the organization on amicable terms. Most importantly, her retirement didn’t cause a rift between her and Vince McMahon, the eccentric and cocky WWE chairman.
“He’s a tough boss, but I don’t say that as a negative thing,” Dumas said. “Someone’s got to steer that crazy ship. He’s fair if you go in there and speak logically. Bottom line, it’s his ship and he’s going to drive it the way he wants to. Maybe you’re not going to see eye to eye. You’ve got to go in there and say your peace. You might not win and that’s OK.”
Most fans don’t realize there are two sides to Vince. They see him portraying himself as a womanizing heathen. They see him wet his pants in the middle of the ring. They see his ludicrous hair vs. hair match with Donald Trump. One Vince McMahon is head of the multi-billion dollar corporation and the other is the colorful Mr. McMahon character who aims to boost television taings.
“There’s him as a boss opposed to him as the president of the ‘Kiss My (expletive) Club,’” Dumas said. “You say that laughing, but there are people that aren’t laughing and don’t get it.”
Dumas is no longer closely tied to wrestling. She wasn’t there during the Chris Benoit tragedy or the explosion of controversy surrounding steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, so she doesn’t feel it’s her place to comment on those issues. But she is sure of one needed change: required rest.
Will Dumas ever strap her wrestling boots back on in the WWE full time? She hasn’t ruled out a return for a short storyline, perhaps culminating in a match at a Wrestlemania.
“I absolutely say, ‘Never say never,’” Dumas said. “It was out of the blue doing the (‘Raw’) 15th anniversary show (Dec. 2007). Howard Finkel called asking me to be on it, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I think we’re on tour during that time, so sorry.’ Then I checked my schedule and saw that was the only day we were off during the entire tour. Sure, I’ll do it, as long as Cryme Tyme isn’t throwing yeast infection cream out into the audience, or whatever it was. I’d be up for going out and having fun for a night.”
Now that Dumas is pursuing her music career, she intends on having fun every night.
